Darwin Waterfront Precinct.

Sterling have been maintaining the grounds of the 150,000m2 Darwin Waterfront Precinct grounds since they opened in 2009.

We face different challenges throughout the seasons, with the wet requiring constant wide-area weed management as well as plant growth monitoring and tree maintenance after storms. The dry season events schedule requires close management of the lawn maintenance and irrigation due to high numbers of foot traffic and large marquees being set up frequently.

Throughout the whole year all our daily work needs to be conducted without endangering or causing disturbance to visitors due to the space being so popular.

Landscaping, Design & Construct.

Master Builders Awards 2015 finalist - $50M development category.

This has been our most monumental project to date. Sterling NT was awarded the landscaping design and construct contract for the new Toga development at the Darwin Waterfront.

This consisted of designing and constructing a world class landscape that is easy to maintain and is perfectly suited to its environment, while mirroring the existing Stage 1 development landscaping.

In January 2015, we completed Stage 1, 2 and 3, which is the design and construction of the landscaping and irrigation for the sprawling public domain and park, road verges and garden beds, three multi-story apartment buildings and the Charles Darwin University Business School. We completed this under extremely tight timeframes and coordinated with multitude of other trades also vying for completion. In December 2015, we completed the ancillary Goyder Park with tree planting, irrigation and grassing of the space for the opening ceremony on the 05 February 2016 commemorating George Goyder’s landing in Port Darwin.

The irrigation system, designed and installed by Sterling NT, is a state of the art system comprising of Toro 2-wire controllers systems and high density polypropylene lines throughout. The system was designed and installed to minimise water use, with a manufacturers guarantee on most components of 25 years.

We are now commencing the remainder of the project which involves rehabilitation of civil stockpiling areas. We have also been invited to design and construct the next stage of the Darwin Waterfront development, which will constitute a large tower and waterfront blocks encased by a world class landscape.

NT Department of The Attorney-General & Justice.

Magistrates Court.

We were first awarded this contract in 2012, after the site languished for years under the previous contractor; the site was left with years of dirt and dust build up and the toilets were less than appealing.

We applied ourselves to this project with fervour and the site was restored in short order. We provide cleaning for over 10,000sqm of office space, court rooms, toilets, foyers, lifts, receptions and common spaces spread over two large buildings in the Darwin CBD. We have maintained the standards at this site over the years and in December 2015, were awarded the contract for another 3 years.

Retaining contracts have always been a hallmark of our organisation where some contracts have been with us for over 20 years, which demonstrates our ongoing commitment to quality and providing best value.

Goodstart Early Learning Centres.

We have been the general repair maintenance contractor for Goodstart for the past 3 years. Overall we have 10 Centres that we look after, completing routine repairs and reactive maintenance, while being aware of the sensitivities required for working in the proximity of young children. Major works are required to be carried out after hours and the site must be left safe at the end of each shift for the centre to operate as per normal the following day.

A full list of building maintenance service for this project include:

  • General building repairs and upkeep works.
  • Painting works.
  • Fencing repairs.
  • Carpet, vinyl and tile flooring repair and replacement.
  • Cabinetry installation.
  • Lighting and electrical audits, repairs and new installations.
  • Carpentry – including repairs and additions to floors, walls, ceiling, doors and flyscreens.
  • Construction of sheds and support structures.

Dinah Beach Boat Ramp Pontoon Repairs.

The floating pontoon at East Arm and Dinah Beach boat ramps were experiencing public safety issues as a result of equipment failure.

The spindles connecting the individual ballast tanks would fail due to corrosion making the jetty unsafe and dangerous. Sections of the pontoon would float away with the tide, leading to potential equipment and property damage and requiring retrieval and reinstallation.

The Department of Infrastructure raised the issue with the pontoon manufacturer, who engaged a marine engineering company to repair the pontoon and replace all of the spindles with a replacement item. The repair was short lived and within months, the replaced spindles were experience the same corrosion issues.

We were engaged to provide remedial repairs to the pontoon. Identifying the material failures, our team redesigned a new heavy duty spindle which has eliminated the failures.
