Darwin Waterfront Precinct

Sterling have been maintaining the grounds of the 150,000m2 Darwin Waterfront Precinct grounds since they opened in 2009.

We face different challenges throughout the seasons, with the wet requiring constant wide-area weed management as well as plant growth monitoring and tree maintenance after storms. The dry season events schedule requires close management of the lawn maintenance and irrigation due to high numbers of foot traffic and large marquees being set up frequently.

Throughout the whole year all our daily work needs to be conducted without endangering or causing disturbance to visitors due to the space being so popular.

Damoe Ra Pathway Remediation Works

The Damoe Ra path is a section of land which has been recently passed to Darwin Waterfront. The area was heavily overgrown, paths encroaching with leaves and green matter and lighting, irrigation and signage all in poor condition. We improved the quality of the path and change the aesthetics of the area to resemble an extension of Darwin Waterfront.

Our scope of work included:

  • Removal of hangers, selfseeders and poorly maintained surrounding trees

  • Replacement of the irrigation system

  • Re-landscaping the garden beds

  • Pressure cleaning the stairs

  • Painting the handrails along the Damoe Ra stairs

  • Sealing the existing exposed aggregate concrete steps with a penetrating sealer

  • Investigating the pathway lights

  • Surveying for future works along the path and Stairs

Garramilla Boulevard and Tiger Brennan Drive Stage 3

Sterling NT completed landscaping to the Garramilla Boulevard and Tiger Brennan Drive duplication project. We were responsible for the landscaping, including transplanting large fig trees and planting of trees, shrubs, ground cover plants and tube stocks, irrigation design and installation, installation of Stratavault tree pits and supply of grass seeding.

Sterling NT supplied and planted 376 x 100L and 300L trees and 25,047 tubestock shrubs and ground plants, as well as a feature green wall. The scope also included transplanting 15 x 13.5m mature fig trees from the nursery, requiring extensive coordination and a range of equipment, including 30-tonne and 50-tonne cranes, a purposefully designed anchoring system to prevent damage and multiple drop-deck trucks for transportation to site. Sterling NT carried out 22,000m2 of native regeneration, with drip irrigation and jute matting installed, resulting in an excellent vegetation success rate.

Sterling NT developed a partnership with local Indigenous contracting business YBE to engage Indigenous job seekers in planting, mulching and landscape maintenance as an entry into landscaping. A mentor was assigned to the YBE employees to support them in work readiness and responsibilities on site each day.
